The Azores are an archipelago of 9 Portuguese islands, that extend for more than 600 km, and lie in a northwest-southeast direction in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km from Lisbon and about 3,900 km from the east coast of North America. On the east group there's Santa Maria e São Miguel, on the central group there's Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial; and on the west group there's Flores and Corvo.
The vast extension of the Azores Islands defines an immense exclusive economic zone of 1.1 million km². All of the islands have volcanic origins, though Santa Maria also has some reef contribution. The mountain of Pico on Pico Island, at 2,351 m in altitude, is the highest in all of Portugal.
The volcanism still active in several islands and it is used as a source of geothermal energy. At the bottom of some extinguished volcano craters, there are lagoons, and the most famous is the lagoon of Sete Cidades, on the São Miguel Island. The Azores are actually the tops of some of the tallest mountains on the planet, as measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean.
The main touristic islands are Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico and they offer a wide range of lodgings, from comfortable hotels to hospitable residential hotels, complemented by restaurants, bars and night clubs. All the other islands have hotels and restaurants and they are also nice place to have good holidays.
